It was established in 1979 when PEP Stores acquired a small eight-store grocery chain from the Geller and Rogut families, and by 2026 operated 3,710 stores across 8 African countries and employed more than 174,400 people, the largest private-sector employer in South Africa; the group generated R274.8 billion in revenue in 2026 under CEO P.C. Engelbrecht and Chairperson Wendy Lucas-Bull. Its portfolio includes the Checkers and USave chains, pharmacies, furniture retail, and financial services divisions.
