Severn Trent plc is a British water utility headquartered in Coventry, England, one of the largest water and wastewater companies in the United Kingdom by customer numbers. It was created in 1974 as the Severn Trent Water Authority, a public regional water authority formed to manage water supply and sewage treatment across the Severn and Trent river basins in the English Midlands, and it became a private company in 1989 when the British water industry was privatized. Severn Trent supplies drinking water and treats wastewater for millions of households and businesses across the English Midlands and parts of Wales, and, like other privatized British water utilities, has faced sustained public and regulatory scrutiny over sewage discharges into rivers and waterways, infrastructure investment and customer billing.
