Royal Bank of Canada, commonly known as RBC, is a Canadian multinational bank with its executive headquarters in Toronto and its legal head office in Montreal, the largest bank in Canada by market capitalization. It traces its origins to the Merchants Bank of Halifax, founded in Nova Scotia in 1864, which adopted the Royal Bank of Canada name in 1901 as it expanded across the country. RBC operates across personal and commercial banking, wealth management, insurance and capital markets, with a large domestic Canadian branch network alongside substantial operations in the United States and other international markets, including through its RBC Capital Markets investment banking arm. It is one of the largest banks in North America by assets.
