Riseup is a volunteer-run social movement organization based in Seattle, launched by activists around 1999 or 2000 to provide secure communications tools, including encrypted email, mailing lists, VPN service, online chat and cloud storage, mainly for activists and social justice groups. By 2013 it served roughly six million subscribers across about fourteen thousand mailing lists and gained wider recognition for hosting WikiLeaks after Amazon Web Services dropped the organization in 2010.
