Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) is an American-funded international broadcaster headquartered in Prague, formed from two separate Cold War-era services, Radio Free Europe (1949) and Radio Liberty (1951), which merged their operations in 1976. Funded by the US Congress through the US Agency for Global Media, it broadcasts news and information in dozens of languages to audiences in countries including Russia, Iran, Afghanistan and much of the former Soviet space, with a founding mission of providing an alternative to state-controlled media.
