PSINet was an early commercial internet service provider based in Ashburn, Virginia, founded on December 5, 1989 and beginning service on January 1, 1990, among the first companies to sell internet connectivity to customers. It grew rapidly through the 1990s but never achieved profitability, filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June 2001 during the dot-com crash, after which its United States assets were acquired by Cogent Communications in 2002 and its international operations sold separately.
