Paulaner is a German brewery founded in 1634 in Munich by the Paulaner Order of mendicant friars, with the earliest documented evidence of the brewery being a February 24, 1634 letter of complaint from civilian brewers about monastery competition. It is majority owned by the Schorghuber family, which holds 70 percent, with the remaining 30 percent held by Heineken International. Paulaner ranks as roughly the sixth best-selling beer in Germany and is one of six breweries permitted to serve at Munich's Oktoberfest, exporting about one million hectoliters to more than 70 countries in 2016.
