NTPC Limited is an Indian state-owned power generation company headquartered in New Delhi, and the largest power company in India by installed capacity. It was established on November 7, 1975, as the National Thermal Power Corporation on the initiative of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and began work on its first thermal power project the following year at Shaktinagar in Uttar Pradesh. As of October 2024 NTPC operated an installed capacity of more than 80,000 megawatts across 55 power stations drawing on coal, gas, hydro, wind, and solar sources, and although its capacity represents roughly 16 percent of India's national total, its operational efficiency lets it generate more than a quarter of the country's electricity.
