Novatek is Russia's second largest natural gas producer behind Gazprom and, as of a 2020 ranking, the seventh largest publicly traded company globally by natural gas production volume. Founded in August 1994 under the name OAO FIK Novafininvest by Leonid Mikhelson, the public company is based in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region of West Siberia while maintaining a head office in Moscow, and the 2020 Forbes Global 2000 ranked it as the 316th largest public company in the world.
