NEC Corporation is a Japanese multinational information technology and electronics company headquartered in Minato, Tokyo. It was founded in 1899 as Nippon Electric Company, Limited, a joint venture with the American company Western Electric, making it one of Japan's oldest electronics manufacturers still operating under a continuous corporate lineage. NEC's history spans early telecommunications equipment manufacturing and a long-running personal computer business that dominated the Japanese PC market for years; today the company concentrates on IT services, telecommunications and networking equipment, biometric and artificial intelligence technology, and public safety systems.
