The Neath and Brecon Railway began as the Dulas Valley Mineral Railway, incorporated in 1862 to carry coal from the Onllwyn area northeast of Neath to the quays there, and was reconstituted the following year under its later name. Its line opened to Onllwyn in 1863, reached Brecon in 1867 and gained a junction to Swansea in 1873; the Midland Railway operated its mineral traffic for many years, but after the 1922 Grouping traffic shifted to easier routes, passenger service ended in 1962 and only occasional mineral trains ran afterward.
