Metro AG is a German multinational wholesale company headquartered in Dusseldorf, founded in 1964 by Ernst Schmidt and Wilhelm Schmidt-Ruthenbeck, that operates membership-only cash and carry stores primarily under the Metro brand. In 2010 it ranked as the fourth largest retailer in the world by revenue behind only Walmart, Carrefour and Tesco, before restructuring in 2017 to divest its consumer retail divisions and focus solely on wholesale. As of the 2024-2025 fiscal year the company operated 622 wholesale locations across 21 countries, employed 86,740 people, and generated 32.447 billion euros in revenue.
