Meridian Energy is a New Zealand electricity generator and retailer headquartered in Wellington, and the country's largest generator, producing about 35 percent of New Zealand's electricity from seven hydroelectric power stations and five wind farms with more than 2,750 megawatts of installed capacity domestically. It was formed on 16 December 1998 out of the breakup of the state owned Electricity Corporation of New Zealand, was partially privatised in 2013, and remains majority owned by the New Zealand government. Meridian also owns the electricity retail subsidiary Powershop.
