Mercury NZ is a New Zealand electricity generation company and a multi-product utility retailer of electricity, gas, broadband and mobile telephone services, generating all of its power from renewable sources. It operates nine hydroelectric stations on the Waikato River, five geothermal plants in the central North Island, and several wind farms. Headquartered in Auckland and founded on 1 April 1999 from earlier state electricity entities, Mercury is majority owned by the New Zealand government, which holds about 51 percent of the company, and trades on the New Zealand stock exchange.
