Marriott International, Inc. is an American multinational hospitality company headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, tracing back to a root beer stand J. Willard and Alice Marriott opened in Washington, D.C. in 1927, which grew into a restaurant chain before the family entered the hotel business in the 1950s. It became the world's largest hotel company by number of locations after its 2016 acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts, operating a large portfolio of lodging brands spanning budget to luxury, including Marriott, Sheraton, Westin, W Hotels and the Ritz-Carlton.
