Marathon Oil Corporation was an American oil and gas exploration and production company headquartered in Houston, Texas. Its history traced to 1887, when it was founded in Ohio as The Ohio Oil Company, an early oil producer later acquired into the Standard Oil group before becoming independent again after Standard Oil's 1911 breakup; the company adopted the Marathon name in 1962. In 2011 Marathon Oil separated its refining, marketing and transportation business as an independent public company, Marathon Petroleum Corporation, retaining the exploration and production business under the original Marathon Oil name. Marathon Oil continued as a pure exploration and production company with major US shale operations and international assets until it was acquired by ConocoPhillips in a transaction completed in November 2024, after which it ceased to exist as an independent public company.
