The Los Angeles and San Gabriel Valley Railroad was founded on September 5, 1883 by James F. Crank to bring a rail line from downtown Los Angeles to Pasadena, California, opening in 1886 and later extending into the San Gabriel Valley to reach Azusa, Monrovia and Pomona. Its independent existence was brief: it was sold and consolidated into the California Central Railway on May 20, 1887, which was in turn absorbed into the Southern California Railway Company in 1889 and then sold to the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in 1906. The line closed in 1994 but its right-of-way reopened in 2003 as the Metro Gold Line light rail service.
