Lonza Group AG is a Swiss multinational company headquartered in Basel that manufactures pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and nutrition ingredients and provides contract development and manufacturing services to drug and biotech companies. It was founded in 1897 as a hydroelectric power company in the Swiss canton of Valais, taking its name from the Lonza river whose flow it harnessed, before expanding into calcium carbide and later chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing. Lonza today operates as a major contract development and manufacturing organization, producing active pharmaceutical ingredients, biologics, and cell and gene therapy materials on behalf of other pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.
