The Llynvi and Ogmore Railway was formed in 1866 by the amalgamation of the Llynvi Valley Railway, opened in Glamorganshire, Wales in 1861 to carry mineral products to the Bristol Channel at Porthcawl, with the Llynvi and Ogmore Railway line opened in 1865. The Llynvi Valley Railway had itself adopted an earlier tramroad, the Duffryn Llynvi and Porthcawl Railway, and Porthcawl harbour was an important destination for the merged company's traffic before that trade declined.
