LG Chem is South Korea's largest chemical company, headquartered in Seoul, with origins tracing to 1947 as Lucky Chemical Industrial Corporation, a cosmetics maker, before it became a business to business enterprise after spinning off its consumer products into LG Household and Health Care. Formally established in its current form in 2009, the company operates eight factories in South Korea and 29 business locations across 15 countries, ranking as the ninth largest chemical company in the world by sales in 2021, and is 33 percent owned by LG Corporation. Its main businesses are petrochemicals, advanced materials and life sciences, and its recent activity includes a 571 million dollar acquisition of AVEO Pharmaceuticals in 2023 and the earlier spinoff of its battery business as LG Energy Solution, in which it still holds an 81 percent stake.
