Lenovo Group Limited is a Chinese multinational technology company that designs, manufactures, and sells personal computers, smartphones, and related consumer electronics, with its registered headquarters in Hong Kong and major operational centers in Beijing and Morrisville, North Carolina. It was founded in 1984 in Beijing by eleven engineers from the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, led by Liu Chuanzhi, with an initial investment of about 200,000 yuan. Lenovo's most consequential expansion came in 2005, when it acquired IBM's personal computer division for 1.25 billion dollars, gaining the ThinkPad and ThinkCentre brands along with IBM's manufacturing technology and international reach. By 2013 Lenovo had become the world's largest personal computer vendor by unit sales, a position it has continued to hold.
