Krispy Kreme is an American multinational doughnut company and coffeehouse chain founded by Vernon Rudolph, who acquired a yeast raised doughnut recipe from a New Orleans chef and opened the first shop in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1937. Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, the company operates about 1,400 locations, went public in 2000, faced accounting scandals that led to a return to private ownership under JAB Holding Company in 2016, and returned to public trading on the Nasdaq exchange in July 2021.
