Kostritzer is a German brewery specializing in Schwarzbier, or black beer, based in Bad Kostritz, Thuringia, near Gera. First mentioned in inheritance tax documents as the Kostritzer Inheritance in 1543, it is one of Germany's oldest breweries. Besides its flagship Schwarzbier, it produces varieties including Edel-Pils and Diat-Pils, and under Bitburger ownership since 1991 it holds roughly 30 percent of Germany's dark bottom-fermented beer market, with an annual production capacity of 700,000 hectolitres.
