Kofola ČeskoSlovensko is a Czech beverage company headquartered in Krnov, best known for its eponymous carbonated soft drink and one of the leading beverage producers in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, where it is the main rival to Coca-Cola and Pepsi. The Kofola drink originated in 1959 at a Czechoslovak research institute studying uses for surplus caffeine from coffee roasting and launched commercially in 1960, becoming popular in communist Czechoslovakia as a home grown alternative to Western colas. The Samaras family acquired the brand in 2000 and built it into a wider group through acquisitions of Polish, Slovenian and Czech beverage brands, and the company's shares trade on both the Prague and Warsaw stock exchanges.
