Johnson Matthey Plc is a British specialty chemicals and precious-metals company headquartered in London, founded in 1817 by the goldsmith and assayer Percival Norton Johnson, later joined by George Matthey, whose combined surnames give the firm its name. The company was historically the official assayer and refiner of precious metals for the Bank of England and the London Bullion Market. Today Johnson Matthey is especially known for catalytic converter and emissions-control catalyst technology used in vehicles, alongside its continuing precious-metals refining and recycling business.
