Islamic Republic of Iran Railways is the national state-owned railway system of Iran, overseen by the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development. Passenger and freight operations are managed respectively through two associated companies, the Raja Passenger Train Company and the Railway Transportation Company. As of 2011 the network carried about 33 million tonnes of freight and 29 million passengers annually, representing roughly 9 percent and 11 percent of all transportation activity in Iran.
