Intuitive Surgical, Inc. is an American medical device and robotics company headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, the maker of the da Vinci Surgical System, the dominant robotic-assisted surgery platform in the world. The company was founded in 1995 to commercialize technology allowing a surgeon to control miniaturized surgical instruments through a console using magnified three-dimensional vision, rather than operating directly by hand, and its da Vinci system received United States regulatory approval in 2000. Intuitive Surgical's systems are used across a wide range of minimally invasive procedures in urology, gynecology, general surgery, and other specialties, and the company has maintained a leading position in the surgical robotics market it helped establish.
