Interoceanic Railway of Mexico

The Interoceanic Railway of Mexico was incorporated in Great Britain in 1888 to finish an unfinished narrow gauge route across Mexico and compete with the established Mexican Railway. It completed a 3 foot gauge main line from Mexico City to Veracruz in 1891 and, through subsidiaries, expanded to branch lines serving Puebla, Cuautla and Acapulco, adding a branch to Teziutlan in 1902 and the Mexican Southern Railway between Puebla and Oaxaca from 1910. The Mexican government took control of the company in 1903 and later sold it to the National Railroad of Mexico, and although that company merged into a larger national system in 1909, the Interoceanic and its two subsidiaries continued operating as separate companies. Following Mexico's 1990s rail privatization, Kansas City Southern de Mexico acquired most of the main line, Ferromex took over several branches, and a section survives as a heritage railway and museum at Cuautla, Morelos.
