id Software LLC is an American video game developer based in Richardson, Texas, founded on February 1, 1991, by programmers John Carmack and John Romero, game designer Tom Hall and artist Adrian Carmack, all formerly of the computer company Softdisk. The studio pioneered technology behind the Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake franchises, playing a founding role in the first-person shooter genre: Wolfenstein 3D is often considered the first true example of the genre, Doom popularized it alongside PC gaming generally, and Quake was id's first fully three dimensional shooter. ZeniMax Media acquired id Software in June 2009, and ZeniMax itself was acquired by Microsoft in March 2021.
