Iberia is the flag carrier of Spain, founded in 1927 and headquartered in Madrid, with its principal hub at Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suarez Airport, a major gateway between Europe and Latin America. The airline was state-owned for most of the twentieth century before eventual privatization, and it merged with British Airways' parent in 2011 to form International Airlines Group, under which Iberia continues to operate as a distinct brand alongside British Airways, Aer Lingus and Vueling. Iberia's extensive Latin American network, built on Spain's historic ties to the region, remains one of its principal competitive strengths, and it is a founding member of the Oneworld airline alliance.
