Hoegaarden Brewery, in the Belgian village of Hoegaarden, has roots in a local witbier brewing tradition dating to 1445 that lapsed when the last local brewery closed in 1957. Pierre Celis revived the style in 1967 by founding a new brewery, de Kluis, but sold to Interbrew after a 1985 fire caused financial strain; the brewery has been part of Anheuser-Busch InBev since Interbrew's 2004 merger with AmBev. A planned 2006 relocation of production to Jupille was reversed in September 2007, and the company instead invested 60 million euros to keep brewing in Hoegaarden, where it continues to produce its hazy, unfiltered wheat beer.
