Heineken N.V., trading as The Heineken Company, is a Dutch multinational brewing company headquartered in Amsterdam, founded in 1864 when Gerard Adriaan Heineken bought an existing Amsterdam brewery, with the company remaining substantially controlled by the Heineken family through subsequent generations. The company has grown through extensive international acquisition into one of the largest brewers in the world by volume, owning more than a hundred breweries across dozens of countries and producing several hundred beer and cider brands ranging from its flagship green-bottled Heineken lager to regional and craft brands acquired along the way. Heineken's green star logo and lager have become one of the most recognized beer brands internationally, exported to markets well beyond the company's home Dutch market.
