The Harvard/MIT Cooperative Society, commonly known as the Coop, is a retail cooperative serving the Harvard University and MIT campuses in Cambridge, Massachusetts, founded as the Harvard Cooperative in 1882 to supply books, school supplies and wood and coal for winter heating. It is now one of the largest college campus bookstores, serving students, faculty, alumni and employees of both institutions, and while open to the general public, its membership benefits and discounts are limited to eligible members; the cooperative expanded to MIT in 1916 when the institute moved to Cambridge and invited the Coop to open a branch there.
