Great Northern Railway was a British railway company incorporated in 1846 to build a line from London to York. The company pursued an aggressive strategy of acquiring and leasing numerous local railways to extend its territorial reach, a strategy that left it financially overextended, and it operated as an independent company from 1846 until 1922.
