The Grand Trunk Railway was a railway system, founded in 1852, that operated in the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario and in the American states of Connecticut, Maine, Michigan, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, headquartered operationally in Montreal with corporate offices in London. It was a major transportation link in British North America and one of the factors that pushed the colonies toward Confederation, later expanding westward as the Canadian railway network developed. The company was fully absorbed into the Canadian National Railway in January 1923.
