Grammarly is an American English-language writing assistant software tool created by Alex Shevchenko, Max Lytvyn and Dmytro Lider, launched in July 2009 in Ukraine. It began as a service that checked spelling, grammar and tone and identified plagiarism, and since 2025 has added generative AI capabilities such as essay generation, citation suggestions and AI-detection features. Grammarly is offered as a freemium service through standalone applications, browser extensions for Chrome, Safari and Firefox, and an integration with Google Docs, and it supports several regional variants of English including American, British, Canadian, Australian and Indian English. Its parent company, Superhuman Platform Inc., is headquartered in San Francisco with additional offices in Kyiv, New York and Vancouver, and has grown the business into a broader AI productivity platform through acquisitions including the productivity software Coda and the email client Superhuman.
