Georgia Southern and Florida Railway

The Georgia Southern and Florida Railway, known as the Suwanee River Route, was founded in 1885 as the Georgia Southern and Florida Railroad and began service in 1889 between Macon and Valdosta, Georgia, later extending to Palatka, Florida. The railroad carried freight and passengers across the southeastern United States, crossing the Suwanee River on its route south. It went bankrupt by 1891 and was reorganized as the Georgia Southern and Florida Railway in 1895 under the control of the Southern Railway. It was eventually acquired by the Norfolk Southern Railway, under which it still operates as a subsidiary.
