Garuda Indonesia is the flag carrier of Indonesia, founded in the late 1940s around the time of Indonesian independence and headquartered near Soekarno-Hatta International Airport outside Jakarta, its principal hub. The airline takes its name from Garuda, the mythical bird-being of Hindu and Buddhist tradition that also appears as Indonesia's national emblem, and it is majority owned by the Indonesian government. Garuda operates domestic routes across Indonesia's vast archipelago alongside international service to Asia, Australia, the Middle East and beyond, and the carrier underwent a major debt restructuring in the early 2020s after financial difficulties compounded by the coronavirus pandemic's impact on international air travel.
