Ferromex, formally Grupo Mexico Transportes, is a private rail consortium that operates the largest railway network in Mexico by mileage, spanning about 12,100 kilometers. Founded on February 19, 1998 and headquartered in Mexico City, it emerged from the privatization of the government-owned railways of Mexico under President Ernesto Zedillo, and is owned by Grupo Mexico, holding 74 percent, and Union Pacific Corporation, holding 26 percent. It is frequently classified alongside the Class I railroads of North America and carries both freight and passenger traffic.
