Ferrocarriles Argentinos was the state-owned company that ran Argentina's entire rail network, formed on 1 March 1948 when the government of Juan Peron nationalized the country's private railway lines. Organized into six divisions named for Argentine historical figures, the company operated the largest rail network in Latin America, reaching about 47,000 kilometers at its peak in 1954. Mounting losses under later governments led to the cancellation of long-distance passenger service in March 1993 and the company's liquidation on 7 July 1995 as part of President Carlos Menem's privatization program; the name was revived in 2015 for a new state rail operator.
