The Ferrocarril de Antofagasta a Bolivia is a private railway running from the Chilean port of Antofagasta to La Paz, Bolivia, built on a concession granted in 1872 to Melbourne Clarke and Co and organized as the Antofagasta Nitrate and Railway Company after construction began in 1873. Its 1,537 kilometer narrow gauge line climbs from sea level to more than 4,500 meters, with branches reaching 4,815 meters, historically making it the world's highest railway. Since 1982 it has been Chilean controlled and now operates as the transport division of the mining company Antofagasta plc, carrying copper and other freight.
