Expand Energy Corporation is an American natural gas company headquartered in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the largest natural gas producer in the United States. The company was formed in October 2024 through the merger of Chesapeake Energy Corporation and Southwestern Energy Company and renamed Expand Energy shortly afterward. Chesapeake Energy, the larger of the two predecessor companies, had been founded in 1989 by Aubrey McClendon and Tom Ward and became one of the pioneering drivers of the American shale gas boom before a period of heavy debt led it into Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2020, from which it emerged restructured. Expand Energy concentrates its natural gas production in the Appalachian and Haynesville shale basins, combining the acreage both predecessor companies had built up over decades.
