EVN AG is an Austrian electricity producer and distributor headquartered in Maria Enzersdorf, Lower Austria, established in 1922 and grown into one of Europe's larger utilities, serving more than three million customers across 14 countries. Beyond generating and distributing electricity, EVN also operates in water treatment, natural gas supply and waste management, and ranks as Austria's second largest utility company. The name EVN, adopted in 1988, stands for Energie-Versorgung Niederoesterreich, Lower Austrian Energy Supply, and the province of Lower Austria controls 51 percent of the company's shares, with less than 14 percent freely traded on the Vienna Stock Exchange; in 2020 Wiener Stadtwerke acquired a substantial minority stake previously held by the German utility EnBW. In its 2009/10 financial year EVN reported revenue of 2.752 billion euros, employed 8,540 people and held total assets of 6.731 billion euros.
