The Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil was one of the principal railways of Brazil, connecting the states of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais. Its construction contract was signed in 1855 and its first 48-kilometer section opened in 1858, and the network eventually reached cities including Belo Horizonte and Sete Lagoas, with connections extending toward Bahia by 1950; it operated from 1858 until 1957, when its assets passed to the federal railway company Rede Ferroviaria Federal S.A.
