Essential Utilities, Inc. is an American water and natural gas utility headquartered in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, one of the largest publicly traded water utilities in the United States. It traces its origins to the Springfield Water Company, founded in Pennsylvania in 1886, and operated for most of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries as Aqua America, a name adopted in 2004 as the company consolidated numerous small regional water utilities it had acquired across several states. The company took its current name, Essential Utilities, in 2020 after acquiring Peoples, a Pittsburgh-based natural gas distribution utility, broadening its business beyond water and wastewater service into natural gas delivery. Essential Utilities provides regulated water, wastewater and natural gas service to several million customers across multiple states, primarily in the eastern United States.
