Eni S.p.A. is an Italian multinational energy company headquartered in Rome, founded in 1953 by Enrico Mattei as the state-owned Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi (National Hydrocarbons Authority) to develop Italy's oil and gas resources and reduce dependence on the major international oil companies of the time. Partially privatized from the 1990s onward, with the Italian government retaining a significant stake through state holding entities, it remains one of the largest integrated energy companies in the world, active in oil and gas exploration, refining and increasingly renewable energy.
