Endesa, S.A. is a Spanish electric utility headquartered in Madrid, one of the largest electricity companies in Spain. It was founded in 1944 as Empresa Nacional de Electricidad, a state-owned company created to develop hydroelectric power generation in Spain during the Franco era, and it was privatized in stages during the 1990s. Endesa generates, distributes and sells electricity and gas to millions of customers across Spain and Portugal, operating power plants spanning hydroelectric, nuclear, gas and a growing share of wind and solar renewable generation. Since 2009 the Italian utility Enel has held a majority ownership stake in Endesa, making it part of the broader Enel group while Endesa continues to operate as a separately listed Spanish company.
