Eli Lilly and Company is an American pharmaceutical company headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, founded in 1876 by chemist and Union Army veteran Colonel Eli Lilly. It was the first company to mass-produce insulin commercially in the 1920s, working from the discovery made by researchers at the University of Toronto, and it later helped mass-produce the Salk polio vaccine in the 1950s; in the 2020s it became one of the most valuable pharmaceutical companies in the world on the strength of its diabetes and weight-loss drug tirzepatide, sold as Mounjaro and Zepbound.
