The El Paso and Southwestern Railroad began in 1888 as the Arizona and South Eastern Railroad, a short line serving copper mines in southern Arizona. It grew into a 1,200 mile system stretching from Tucumcari, New Mexico south to El Paso, Texas and west to Tucson, Arizona, with lines extending into Sonora, Mexico. The railroad carried copper ore and other freight for the Phelps Dodge mining company and formed part of the transcontinental route of the Golden State Limited passenger train. It was bought by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1924 and fully merged into its parent company by 1955.
