EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A., commonly known as EDP, is a Portuguese multinational electric utility headquartered in Lisbon, one of the largest electricity companies in the Iberian Peninsula. It was formed in 1976 through the nationalization and merger of Portugal's existing private electricity companies following the Carnation Revolution, and was gradually reprivatized in stages of share offerings beginning in the 1990s, though the Portuguese state and Chinese state-owned investors have both held significant stakes at various points. EDP generates and distributes electricity across Portugal and Spain and, through its subsidiary EDP Renovaveis, has become one of the world's largest producers of wind power, with wind farm operations across Europe and the Americas. The company also retains natural gas distribution operations in Portugal.
